Thrilled and Have to Share!

Hi All!

I am a newbie - hello - and am beyond excited that I passed the MSF course with flying colors this weekend! I'm looking forward to the learning experience and all the new adventures that are in store for me...!

Planning to get a bike in the next couple of weeks. I plan to take it slow at first and get comfortable with being on the road before I just hop on and think I can go barreling down the street. Any words of advice to share about being new, inexperienced and out on the road?

Any wisdom you ladies have to share would be great!

i made a deal with God, no racing/showing off for 6 months if I passed that damn crazy eight's course :P Welp, it's been about 14 months now and I have decided it was a good deal and I'm sticking by it :P I lost a foster bro to him speeding 5 mph over the limit and I've decided the cruising style of slow motion and enjoying the route method is my favorite way to go :)

Good luck with however you chose is the best style

      and, and congrats :)

My learning experience from my first ride after passing the class is: There is no shame in "duck walking" around corners or over stuff you're nervous about riding over. My virgin ride on my new bike I dropped it at like 1 mile an hour, broke the foot shifter pedal (luckily, it was coming back into my driveway!) If I had just walked it over the broken pavement, I would have a functioning bike now. It will be easy enough to fix, I just ahd to wait for the part ot come in, and now just need to fix it, hopefully this weekend. Then i'll be back out on the road, carefully walking on my tippy toes aorund sharp corners and over broken pavement. My fabulous "motor girlie" group gave me so much encouragement about "hey everyone drops their bike," and really took me from feeling like the stupidest person in the world to being ready to hop back on that horse and ride. Carefully.

Hello! I just bought a bike 2 weeks ago, after taking the safety course and *not* passing. Luckily, the DMV here in Oregon has an option for a permit, which means I can ride with another rider on another bike, who is over 21 and has their endorsement, only in daylight hours. I'd really rather be out around the neighborhood getting practice at turning and such, though, without having to ask someone to follow me around. =/ I retake the test on 9/10 and I'm pretty confident I'll pass this time.

Also, if it makes you feel better, I ran into a parked car on my first day out - I'd done great all day but I was distracted by not knowing exactly where we were going and I took the corner (25mph, maybe) just a bit too wide. An angel (my Best Friend) fixed my turn signal and brake and I'll get the dent/scratch out of my fender another time. State Farm is taking good care of the guy whose SUV I dinged up.

My advice, so far - don't be afraid to ask for what you need, take it slow, and know exactly where you're going at all times. The bike will go where you look. Don't look at parked cars. =) And have fun!
