hey all
i am lookin to get a new bike - i'm in san fran. I want a small bike just for commuting in the city and running fast errands. I am hoping for a suzuki gs 500 or a honda hawk (they're small, handle well, style I like and they work for my height) been doing craigslist and moto java, but keep hitting dead ends. Any suggestions of where else to look? Any shops in the Bay Area that might sell either on a regular basis?
Thanks

Re: lookin for a new bike
Fri, November 25, 2005 - 7:37 PMI think you're looking in all the reasonable places, and are not going to have better luck looking elsewhere. If you were to expand your options, though...
... say, if you were to consider the Suzuki SV650, I bet you could find one of those on craigslist. It has enough power in the low end of the RPM range to zip you through city traffic, is narrow enough to split lanes without making you nervous, handles exceptionally well, is light enough to maneuver in and out of unusual parking spots without creating new grey hairs, and is perfect for less-than-tall people. I'm 5'4", and I have no trouble with it, and my boyfriend's mother is even shorter and she has two SV650's! It also transitions nicely to a bike for freeway riding, longer commutes, twisties, or long trips. It's really a bike that's greater than the sum of its parts. I had heard so many people rave about it, and read so many reviews that praised the little bike, that I finally broke down and took one for a test-ride. Within two weeks, I had bought one used (2001) off craigslist. This was three years ago, and I just love it. They really got it right with this one.
By the way, unless you like riding in a sport-bike position, I do NOT recommend getting the SV-650 S model, because the footpegs are farther back and the nandlebars farther forward/lower on that model. Anyway, I bet if you keep your eyes open, you'll see lots of the regular SV650's around San Francisco, because it's ideal for SF riding. -
