Re: bike week
Tue, November 29, 2005 - 4:46 PMIf a woman goes to Daytona wearing chaps with her ass hanging out, and a barely-there leather halter top, folks will be very friendly to a female.
Seriously, I think that women can and do have a great time at any motorcycle rally, but I believe that there is a far more woman-friendly atmosphere, say, at the Honda Hoot as compared to Daytona or Sturgis.
I've seen a lot of pictures and heard a lot of stories from Daytona, but I haven't been to it myself. What I've seen and heard indicates that there is a fair number of sexist men on cruisers, with "stripper-fied" women perched on the back of their bikes. Some of them still believe that a woman's place is on the passenger seat of a man's bike, and never riding her own. (Grr)
That said, the only way to change the biker culture is to show up on our OWN bikes, dressed the way WE want to dress, and claim the right to be treated with respect as women who ride. It's not all like that at Daytona. Families and women attend, and it's getting less rowdy as time goes on -- from what I hear, at least. I have no hard evidence, and I could be wrong. -

I've found that the very public rallies have a "live and let live" attitude. Sure, there are guys out there who think women shouldn't ride their own, but most of them aren't going to say a damned thing to a woman rider's face. I've been to Laughlin and Hollister and have NEVER had anyone say boo to me about me riding my own bike. I also don't dress "stripperfied", so I don't get the "Show us yer tits!" stupidity, either. In fact, I'm usually ignored, which overall is fine by me. -

Re: bike week
Tue, November 29, 2005 - 8:41 PMThanks - that's great to know. I did try to be very careful to say that I had never gone to Daytona myself, and that I was just relating what friends had told me about it. I'm glad to know that I clearly didn't get the whole picture.
I wish I could go to the big rallies, but just haven't had the magical combination of time and money at the same time. The Hollister rally is close to home, but Sturgis and Daytona are a bit far from Oakland to ride there and back on limited vacation time. Someday... -
