I'm small and I get cold very easily. Then again, I get hot very easily too- go figure. I have a satin lined light leather jacket that I wear now but it doesn't keep me very warm and it's getting cooler out. It also has only 2 pockets and NO PADDING. If I fall, there it all goes. What advice might you ladies have on buying a new riding jacket? Any brands that are a better deal than another? Leather vs. non-leather?

Re: Advice on buying a riding jacket
Fri, August 25, 2006 - 1:09 PMI am the same way Jillian. I bought a Belstaff motorcycle jacket with the spinal, elbow and forearm protection. It also has a removable liner and TONS of pockets. Nice visible color (red) and has some reflective features as well. Those are the main reasons that I bought that jacket .... See: www.belstaff1924.com/ or www.belstaff1924.com/jackets.asp for what is similar to mine ("Mercury Red").
By the way - be careful with leather jackets. I was warned that "fashion" leather is VERY different from motorcycle leather in terms of the thickness, and hence the protection offered.
Happy Riding!

Re: Advice on buying a riding jacket
Fri, August 25, 2006 - 8:19 PMspend the money on riding gear, shop around alot and try not to succumb to the sales pitchs you'll get. Make an informed decision based on the kind of riding you do.
Are you a daily rider, touring rider or weekend, fair weather rider? Are you looking for a 3-4 season balistic or are you looking for leather - this is a style call really. Function over style?
You said you're little, so finding a coat should be fairly easy really - I'm long, and had a hard time finding a coat that would cover my lower back when I was riding.
Call all the motor gear shops in your area, ask if there have ladies riding gear - ask which brands they carry, take notes - they want your business, they'll tell you what you want to know on the phone.
Icon, Vansen, Hien Garick, Alpinestar, Harley Davidson all have good gear, it's just a matter of finding it.
Good luck!

Re: Advice on buying a riding jacket
Fri, August 25, 2006 - 9:06 PMJust take your time choosing. Try on as many as you can, research into different brands/leather etc. I rushed when buying my first 'good' jacket and got a mens one (couldn't wait for a ladies size), it just didn't fit quite right and was always niggling me. Luckily I sold it to a mate and then got one that was the right fit. I like Dainese and Dri-riders, they seem to fit well for me, not too short. -

Re: Advice on buying a riding jacket
Tue, August 29, 2006 - 10:22 AMThanks everyone! I have many more choices than I thought.
I guess I don't need leather, it was just a thought. I am a fair weather rider- rain hurts and I just don't like it. I'm also in upstate NY so it's cold and snows in October and April still sometimes. I do have a sport bike so I tend to get going pretty fast too, my husband is going for a kevlar one and getting rid of his big leather duster (I don't know how he rides in it on his SV650)
Thanks again for all your help! Looks like I have phone calls to make! -

Re: Advice on buying a riding jacket
Tue, September 26, 2006 - 9:56 AMLeather will offer you better protection in a fall.
I strongly suggest this jacket: www.joerocket.com/jrf/produ...roduct.cfm It has a lining that is removeable when the weather gets warmer, as well and arm vents. I cannot tell you how much I adore this jacket!
It comes in some great colors and is fitted for a woman's body. It also looks awesome on! I have the jacket and the matching leather pants: www.ridegear.com/rg/F-25454.html
Icon just came out with some great leather pants and matching jackets as well, though I prefer Joe Rocket.

I agree with ya...
I've dumped at freeway speeds wearing leather, and come away with a couple nicks and scrapes, and dropped a bike slower with ballistic nylon/kev and the N/K didn't protect me as well. True, it was not an aerostitch (which work remarkably well) but it sold me on leather.
I hope it's one thing that doesn't get tested (again), but it's cheap insurance as compared to an emergency room visit.
Advice? Get one that fits well. The last thing you want is to have the arms or waist creep up when it's being ground down on pavement (where the nicks and scrapes I mentioned above came from!) and that was because I got one fitted to a guy's shape. Then again, there wasn't much around for us back then, so ya did the best ya could.
Joe Rocket stuph is amazing. SO is Aerostitch. And looking at the colors (Gunmetal on White?? Sweet!!!) I think I know where some of this OT I'm making is going in the near future... Damn!!!

Re: Advice on buying a riding jacket
Wed, September 27, 2006 - 1:29 PMMy first new leather gear will be arriving maybe tomorrow from NewEnough. com. Got the Power Trip Vintage jacket and chaps (cream and black) for less than $200. (The chaps I'll dye black.) I'm going to have pockets sewn to the inside of the jacket and chaps for TPro armor inserts ($195 at Johnson Leathers in SF). Sure, I'm probably spending too much on the protective parts. But I figure I can reuse the CE armor on any other leather jacket or pants I buy later. And I've got lots of Patagonia ExtremeWear thermals for riding during the cold winter months and a decent wool balaclava for my head and neck. Since I'm not planning to do any freeway driving until I've had at least a good year's worth of regular street and country road riding around my home, I think the girlie 1.2 mm leather will protect me fine should I fall and slide. in a year's time, maybe I'll have lost enough fat to get some really nice two- or one-piece custom-made 1.4 mm leathers that'll protect me should I fall. By then, I hope to have graduated to a bigger (and possibly new) bike. -

Thu, September 28, 2006 - 12:02 PMOoh....the Trixie is hot! I love it! Looks like it would even retain your curves so you don't look waistless with uni-boob.
Thanks! -

Re: Advice on buying a riding jacket
Tue, October 17, 2006 - 10:26 PMI can see I'm hella late to this conversation - but, as someone who is lacking meat on the top (no problem in the rear) I tend to get cold, bone cold and it's hard to shake except with a hot bevvie. I recommend layers (surprise) for the 'I get hot too' part. if I'm out for a weekender, I like a tee base, followed by a marino wool turtle neck (the light gauge kind) followed by my padded leather. the t-neck covers the extra bits where the wind likes to go (down my neck and into the itty bitty openings here and there)
other than that, I concur on the taking your time part - not much more sucky than spending money and not having it be right.
like my amigo likes to say about buying a wetsuit (lots of choices) you'll know its right when it just feels right.
and you dont really want to take it off.
